根据Elite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia定义，Elite (sometimes élite) is a small group of powerful people in political and sociological theory, such as an oligarchy, that controls a disproportionate amount of wealth or political power in society. This group holds a superior position among the ordinary people and exercises greater privilege than the rest of the population. 精英是指控制远高于普通人或不成比例财富和政治权力的人，这些人的产生不一定与高校有关，也不一定与大学培养有关，有的可能是低学历者，有的还可能是高校退学的人，有的是不知名高校培养出来的。如盖茨是哈佛大学退学者，而马云则毕业于杭州师范大学。
